Treatments
Medication and injections
- Pain medication management A plan for using pain medicine safely, with regular follow-up.
- Trigger point injections Injections of a numbing medicine and a steroid into tight muscle knots.
- Cortisone steroid injections Injections that target inflammation in a joint, tendon or muscle.
- Epidural steroid injections A numbing medicine and a steroid placed near irritated spinal nerves.
- Facet and medial branch blocks Injections in or near spinal joints, used to find and treat pain sources.
- Sacroiliac (SI) joint injections Numbing medicine placed in the joint where the spine meets the pelvis.
Treatments
Nerve procedures and devices
- Nerve blocks Numbing medicine, sometimes with a steroid, placed near a specific nerve, including sympathetic nerve blocks.
- Radiofrequency ablation A nonsurgical procedure that uses heat energy on a nerve that carries pain signals.
- Rhizotomy A procedure that targets the nerve connected to a painful facet joint.
- Spinal cord stimulation A device that sends mild electrical pulses to the spinal cord, tried first during a short trial.
- Peripheral nerve stimulation A device that sends mild electrical pulses to a nerve outside the spine. Your provider can tell you whether it may fit you.

Spine procedures and tests
- Discograms An x-ray test that uses dye to look for the disc causing back pain.
- Kyphoplasty A procedure for spinal compression fractures that uses a balloon and bone cement.
