About Epidural Steroid Injections

Epidural steroid injections (ESI) are used to treat severe pain in the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar areas of the spine. The steroid injection is made up of a corticosteroid and an anesthetic numbing agent and is delivered into the spinal nerve. It is typically a solution that allows for healing and rehabilitation of the spine, as it works to reduce inflammation and swelling. At Lewis Pain & Physical Medicine in Frisco, TX, Dr. Jerry Lewis provides ESI to help alleviate spinal pain that can be caused for numerous reasons. As part of an effective treatment plan, an epidural steroid injection may be able to provide you with the relief you need while your body is healing from an injury.

Ideal Candidates for Steroid Injections

There are several conditions that can cause severe pain in an area of the spine, including spinal stenosis, spondylolysis, a herniated disc, a degenerative disc, sciatica, or as a result of trauma or injury. ESI can help provide relief from inflammatory conditions and can help ease pain to allow patients to complete physical therapy. The main goal of ESI is to provide pain relief so that individuals can resume their normal activities and perform rehabilitation exercises. Dr. Lewis can talk with you about the benefits of ESI and how it may be able to provide effective pain relief.

Procedure Technique

Dr. Lewis performs transforaminal ESI under general anesthesia. Using x-ray technology, he inserts the needle into the epidural space and uses the x-ray monitor to guide it toward the inflamed nerve root. For transforaminal ESI, the needle is placed to the side of the vertebra and for this method, one side at a time is treated. After the needle is correctly positioned, Dr. Lewis will inject the steroid medication and then remove the needle.

What to Expect After Steroid Injections

Following the ESI procedure, patients may need some time to fully wake up from the anesthesia. They may also need to be monitored for some time before they can be allowed to leave, and they must have a responsible adult drive them home. Patients may experience some soreness around the injection site and can take over-the-counter pain medications, such as Tylenol, to help relieve any discomfort. Results may take some time to appear and patients should be mindful of their pain levels in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the procedure for their specific condition. In some cases, patients may need to receive additional ESI treatments in order to achieve optimal results.

Loved all the staff. The gentleman I spoke the most with was extremely thorough answering any questions I had as well as one of the other staff members I spoke with to review what Dr. Lewis prescribed. I highly recommend Lewis Pain Clinic. Also, they get you in and out. There wasn’t any waiting around for hours.

The staff remains exceptional. I have been a patient here for almost 3 years and have never had a bad experience. Erica (the RNP) listens carefully to address any concerns I might have. As a retired RN, I’m pretty fussy as to who I let take care of me. I can honestly “highly recommend” this group for pain management.

Everyone is kind and happy to help! They’re ALWAYS on time or early which is a great relief! It feels good to be heard, taken seriously and have it understood that my time is just as valuable!

About Us
What should I avoid after treatment?
You should listen to your symptoms to know how much you can tolerate immediately after treatment. However, you may wish to take things easy for the first 24 hours following your treatment. Work closely with your provider at Lewis Pain & Physical Medicine to not overdo anything after your procedure.
How long before I experience pain relief?
After epidural steroid injections, patients vary on when they experience relief from the pain. Some patients get relief as quickly as within the first few days, while others take a couple of weeks to notice a difference. If you are dissatisfied with the amount of relief your injection provided, contact your practitioner to discuss next steps.
How long will relief last?
Your spinal pain relief should be relatively long-lasting. You should receive a follow-up from our office to check on the status of your relief. If your procedure feels as if it is beginning to wear off, you may be eligible to receive more treatment.
